Scrubs-themed Firelizard Hatching (Ista Weyr Southern Bowl) - Leona - April 20th, 2007

Ista Weyr: Southern Bowl

Compared to that of other weyrs, Ista's bowl is small, and incomplete - northwards, one wall was blown clear away several millenia ago, leaving the view clear towards the plateau, the jungles, and the ocean beyond that. Somewhat elliptical, the breadth of the bowl seems to run Northwest to Southeast, the bustling epicentre of the weyr being here, towards the southwest. Several large entrances have been dug into the great bowl walls here - north east are the hatching grounds, south the Living Caverns, these being the two largest caverns in the weyr.

To the east, a small entrance leads in to the ground weyrs - the ledges of these line the bowl wall above, often filled with dragons of gold or bronze; westwards is another ledge, but with a staircase built into the wall, allowing access to the Sable Sands. The infirmary is located towards the southwest.

Leona is leaning up against Lakareth's side, in the middle of the bowl. In fact, very few people are actually around the edges of the bowl, and a fair few are looking up cautiously. There's been a cave-in recently, but Leona seems far more preoccupied with the basket of sand on the ground in front of her feet. Sand and eggs, rocking eggs.

L'then has arrived with a package, and hands it off to one of the residents. Nirileth, meanwhile, notices the rocking eggs, and huries over quickly. L'then blinks and looks around. "Uhoh…" He follows her over. "I swear, Niri, you'll find a hatching firelizard anywhere nearby."

It was Ahriszajith who alerted Panchali to Leona's small clutch of three. The green was insatiable in this sense, seeking out as many of the little beasties as she could. As if the two browns weren't enough! Speaking of, Khav and Jaol pop out of *between* just then, chittering loudly.

If there is one thing Vi'leko doesn't enjoy doing, it's being a pack mule. Or more so, poor Shidenisseth being the pack mule. "Bah, I've got almost 3 years of riding under my belt and I'm doing carry and deliver services. There's just something not right about that." The bronzerider grumbles, kicking his feet into the ground and unties some packages and tosses them on the ground. "Shids, I tell you, we need to like… do something!" That's about as far as his thought goes. The whole thinking thing was more the dragon's thing, afterall. Vi'leko just stod around and looked pretty. "Oooooh, people." His short attention span has the 'rider forgetting all about the heavy packages on his dragon and instead he moves off to see what everyone is doing. "Soo… what's going on here?"

Rip! The Oversized Egg seems to have torn itself, as it wriggles and wobbles with increasing urgency. A tiny nose pokes through the tear, then pulls back. Talons come out first, tearing at the shell, while strange grunting noises come from within. Nnngh! Once started though, it crumbles easily. Seems the Little Boy Blue Hatchling just needed to get it started first. He stumbles out and manages to smack his face right into the Almost Spotless Egg, knocking himself out. Whoops!

Little Boy Blue Hatchling
Like the egg he hatched from, this blue firelizard seems too small for his skin, which hangs off him like clothes that are several sizes too large. His body is a rich navy hue, beginning around his chest and continuing right down to the ends of his hind legs and tail. His forelegs and neck are more of a light greyish blue, while his wings and head are somewhere in between.

Polished to Perfection this Egg may be, but something has come along to mess up that fine fine job, and that something is a crack on the surface, along with a talon coming from within. With a shudder, the egg's shell gives way, and out jumps a rather showy blue hatchling, unfurling his wings in a very dramatic entrance. The newly hatched Look at Me! Blue Hatchling already believes the world should revolve around him.

Look at Me! Blue Hatchling
Steel blue in colour, this firelizard makes every effort to be seen, in spite of his fairly dull colouring. Towards this end, or perhaps the reason for it, he has developed strong muscles, particularly in the region of his torso. Although, his large cape-like wings look quite delicate and fragile in comparison to his otherwise overly fit body, as well as being a slightly more vivid shade of blue.

The Almost Spotless Egg seems to be experiencing technical difficulties, having trouble hatching at first. The little boy blue hatchling stops, and turns to watch, curiously. First to crack and fall is the brownish bronze disc, landing between the egg and the other hatchling. Then the rest of the shell seems almost to slide open with ease, revealing the Solid Grey-Blue Hatchling, who spends his first moments glaring at the smaller blue, before shoving him aside and looking for food.

Solid Grey-Blue Hatchling
This dark greyish blue firelizard seems to stand a little taller than those of his colour usually do. His front feet are oddly wide, and made to look wider by the spindly thinness of his front toes. On the other hand, his rear legs are rather more muscled and nowhere near as thin. As for body, this matches his rear legs, particularly his thickly built chest. Add in a piercing - and endlessly accusing - stare, and this blue could indeed be seen as a fairly menacing firelizard.

L'then sighs, and thinks for a second, eying the sleeping green hatchling on his shoulder, then shrugs, and pulls out his emergency stash of flit food. "Alright, Niri, I'll see what I can do…" He moves closer to the hatching eggs, and looks around for the responsible party for a second, then crouches down, holding out some pieces of meat, watching for reactions from one of the blues.

Noticing that L'then has made an appearance, Panchali rolls her eyes and makes her way to his side. "Niri's radar go off?"She teases, looping her arm through his. Looking at the three eggs, eyes lighting up as three blues tumble out, Panchali grins. "Aww!"

Nirileth crouches near the scene of the hatching, peering intently at the little blues, and crooning quietly.

Leona is leaning against Lakareth, watching the gathering people and rocking eggs with a slightly grumpy expression. She does snicker at the Little Boy Blue, knocking himself out, though she gets bored when he wakes, and turns to the people gathered, idly. Vi'leko's comments on carry and deliver services pull her attention that-a-way, and she tilts her head at him with a crooked smile. "Someone's gotta do it." and she taps her wing patch, of Bay Pearl - Ista's transport wing.

Little Boy Blue Hatchling wobbles a little uncertainly, his head tilting from side to side as he struggles to clear it after impacting with his darker and larger brother's egg. He stretches his wings and staggers forwards to the rim of the basket, peering blearily up at the offerings of food, though he's not quite able to focus just yet.

Wiggling a bit of meat over the head of the Solid Grey-Blue Hatchling is Panchali, cooing. Khav and Jaol are each adding their own encouragements, warbling and chittering quickly.

L'then grins at Panchali. "Yeah… almost as soon as we arrived. And of course she has to have one." He watches the hatchlings carefully, while talking. "I swear… she's gonna make me get one of each color."

Solid Grey-Blue Hatchling doesn't do much at the moment, except seem to stalk the Little Boy Blue Hatchling, hiding behind shards of egg, and even the Look at Me! Blue Hatchling at one point. Suddenly, there's meat over his head, and he looks up. Oh, food. Chomp! Before anyone is really sure what's happening, the blue has jumped up and clamped his mouth around the bit of meat. Well, that was … sudden.

Solid Grey-Blue Hatchling looks into Panchali's eyes. Impression!

L'then smiles at Panchali. "Congrats… think you can handle three?" He tries wiggling his own meat over the basket. Nirileth croons a little louder, trying to encourage the blues.

Raising an eyebrow, Panchal tosses a defiant glance to L'then as she scoops up the little stocky blue — Sadu. "Of course I can handle three," she insists, looking down at the blu as she feeds him.

Look at Me! Blue Hatchling flexes his wings with obvious pride, though he ducks away whenever either of his brother firelizards seem to be getting close enough to make physical contact with him. No touching! Well, maybe with food. For the sake of food he heads out of the basket, ignoring the Little Boy Blue who isn't quite ready to leave the basket just yet, and eyeing the offerers of meat critically.

L'then chuckles, and wiggles the meat enticingly at the bolder hatchling, moving it a little closer. "Come now… it's good fresh meat."

Look at Me! Blue Hatchling sniffs at a piece of meat here, and a piece of meat there, finally and fussily stepping closer to L'then to inspect his offering a second time. He spreads his wings out, clearly showing off, as he looks at both of his own wings in turn. Who exactly is he trying to impress here? Speaking of impressing, he seems to have found an acceptable offering…

Look at Me! Blue Hatchling looks into L'then's eyes. Impression!

Nirileth blinks happily, her eyes whirling rapidly, a sparkling blue green. L'then carefully offers another piece of meat to the little blue, and lures him into his other hand, lifting him up. "Well… there we go, Niri." He grins wryly. "Another firelizard for us."

Leona stretches, and stares at the last remaining firelizard, then shrugs and starts to walk away. "Someone will take care of it." she says absently, clearly not worried. And why would she be? There are a few people about after all, and even so, firelizards are perfectly capable of surviving on their own.

L'then glances around after a moment, and frowns a bit at the abandoned blue. "That doesn't seem fair…" he murmurs, and glances at Niri, scratching the side of his nose. "I know you wouldn't object…"

L'then gives in, and walks back over to the basket. "I'm gonna need to find some more meat and fast…" he mutters, and offers the remaining blue the last chunk.

Leona tilts her head at L'then, and shrugs. "I was saving this for my break, but here," she holds up a sandwich. "That should do it, it was enough to attract this one. Or was it that one? I forget." she points first to a nearby green, then to a blue. "Want it?"

L'then looks up, and nods, smiling. "That'll do… thanks. They'll eat anything." He chuckles. "I'm a glutton for punishment, but they're such cute little guys." He holds out a hand for the sandwhich, after perching his first blue on his free shoulder.

Leona hands over the sandwich, frowning slightly at the southern end of the bowl, where the living caverns entrance has caved in. "Here, go nuts." she says, with a small smile.

L'then nods. "Thanks." He crouches down, and tries to tempt the lonely blue with a piece of the sandwhich.

Little Boy Blue Hatchling seems to be able to see clearly now, the residual effects of his little head bump apparently gone at last, as he runs over towards the sandwich, crooning with excitement when he notices his brother already there.

Little Boy Blue Hatchling looks into L'then's eyes. Impression!

L'then smiles fondly at the blue, and scoops him up carefully, offering more bites of the sandwhich. "There you go… we'll take care of you. Nirileth will have my hide if I don't."

Leona nods slightly, then nudges the basket, which now only contains sand and egg fragments, with a toe. "You can take that too, if you want." she adds, with a frown. "I've got no use for it now."

L'then considers. "Hmmm… That might be useful. Wouldn't want them to get lost between. Thanks." He nods to Leona. "My thanks, and let me know if I can ever help you with something. L'then, currently of Ierne. My green is Nirileth."

Leona tilts her head, and smiles. "I had a tanner shop out at Ierne, a while back. Nice place." she comments, idly. "Though I do prefer Weyrs, in general. But that may just be me." she shrugs. "I was born and raised at Telgar Weyr, which may have had something to do with it."

L'then smiles. "I'm not sure yet… I like it, but I impressed and spent seven years at Eastern." He shrugs a bit. "Still miss it sometimes. But the change of scenery is nice too."

Leona grins, and nods. "Changes of scenery are always a good thing. I left Telgar when I was fifteen, and spent the next ten turns travelling with Karell. Oddly enough, I was searched for and impressed at Telgar. Odd coincidence, that. Of course, I never did get used to staying in one place, so a couple of turns later I wound up at Ierne, then a few turns after that I got restless again, and I wound up here. Haven't gotten restless yet, being busy with the Bay Pearl wing is keeping that at bay for now."

L'then smiles. "I've been keeping plenty busy as well… Just transfered from Eastern to Ierne. And then lots of delivery riding myself. Good way to make a little money."

Leona chuckles, and nods. "And see Pern. That's what the Bay Pearl wing does, deliveries and such. There's been a little too much paperwork for my liking, but that comes with the fancier knot. I do still get to do the hands-on delivery thing, and I do enjoy that part."

L'then smiles at Leona, nodding, and diligently feeding the hungry blues with some of his attention. "Aye. I've seen more weyrs in the last two sevendays…" He chuckles. "Niri loves it though. She likes taking the heavy packages."

Leona grins, and nods at Lakareth. "Lakareth here just loves to fly. He has a weak foreleg, so he limps when he's moving around on the ground, but it hasn't affected his wings in the least. Some people are so surprised to see him in the air." she snorts, and rolls her eyes. "One of these days I'll have seen all of Pern, and I'm not sure what I'll do with myself then."

L'then smiles. "He's a handsome brown. Just Niri's type. If she wasn't distracted by the little ones." He sighs, and looks at the sky. "Well… I've been too long. I should get back to Ierne, and figure out how I'm going to take care of these three while still getting my deliveries done."

Leona snorts, and rolls her eyes in Lakareth's direction. "I'm afraid I've got no idea what his type is exactly, only that there aren't too many of them. He's rather strange, not very interested in flights at all. Not that I mind, Karell worries that I'll run off with some rider. Which is crazy, but there it is." she shrugs, and glances to the sky. "Come back some time when the Weyr isn't falling apart, I'll show you around a bit. And if you're ever looking to change location, I could always use more riders in my wing."

L'then smiles. "I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for your time… and your sandwhich." He takes the basket, and carefully transfers the two blues into it, without eliciting much protest. "I'll take you up on that tour offer, if I get a chance. Ista has always been lovely. A lot like Great Bay, where I grew up."

Leona chuckles, and nods. "Ista is nothing like Telgar, where I grew up. And I think that's what I like about it. Besides, the climate is far kinder to Lakareth's leg here, the cold doesn't really hurt it, but it definitely doesn't help. Lakareth loves to rest in the water down at the beach." and with that she nods in a sort of farewell gesture, then turns and walks away. What a strange woman.

L'then shakes his head a bit, and chuckles, then moves to Niri, carefully fastening the basket with the blues. "Let's get these two home, Niri. And get them comfortable." Nirileth thrums happily, and waits for L'then to mount.

Oversized Egg
The shell of this egg seems loose somehow, like a child dressing up in their parent's clothing. In fact, clothing is almost exactly what it looks like, with tiny wrinkles here and there, like some kind of fabric. In colour, this egg is largely a deep navy blue, but there seem to be one stripe on each side of a paler greyish blue.

CREDITS: Clutch Theme: Scrubs… Hatchling: JD… Egg: A large pair of scrubs, taking Kelso's quote from the pilot ("Don't you realise you're nothing but a large pair of scrubs to me?") fairly literally. The hatching message is based on two separate incidents. One from a later episode, when JD is trying to tear up a photo, with much grunting and straining, and 'just needs to get it started first', and the other is from the end of the pilot, when he goes to leave the hospital and smacks his face on the door. (The 'Almost Spotless Egg' was based on that door… This firelizard was written by Leona)

Polished to Perfection Egg
Sleek and shiny, these are two qualities this egg seems to possess in abundance. The smooth surface appears to have been lovingly hand polished, over and over and over, as if it is never enough. As if this egg simply has to be the best, and compromise is not an option. The coloration of the reflective shell is quite dark, either black or a very deep shade of navy blue.

CREDITS: Clutch Theme: Scrubs… Hatchling: Dr. Cox… Egg: I had trouble settling on something here, as I'd tried to base all three on things from the pilot (JD's is Kelso's "nothing but a large pair of scrubs" and the Janitor's is the door - and the penny) but in the end I chose Dr. Cox's car, instead. As Dr. Cox himself once said, "I have a giant ego!" - this firelizard is based on that, as well as Dr. Cox's need to be the center of attention, and the fact that he works hard to look his best.

Almost Spotless Egg
This egg is quite clear of markings, and somewhat shiny to boot. It looks as though it has been carefully and thoroughly cleaned, buffed, and polished. Of course there is one imperfection to this otherwise pristine glassy-blue egg — a tiny disc of dull brownish bronze, resting almost exactly on the top of the shell. How odd.

CREDITS: Clutch Theme: Scrubs… Hatchling: The Janitor… Egg: The moment in the pilot, where the janitor is fixing the door, and JD is loitering nearby waiting for somebody. The egg is based on that door, and the small 'brownish bronze disc' is supposed to be a penny. The exchange went something like this: Janitor: 'Door is stuck. Maybe the fourth time or so, it don't open.' JD: 'Maybe there's a penny stuck in there?' Janitor: 'Why a penny? If I find a penny in there, I'm taking you down.' … This exchange was just the first of many times the Janitor went after JD for no reason… (This firelizard was written by Leona)
